Well, about me, really...

Dwight Caswell

Studio 457 is me, Dwight Caswell. Why I named my studio "457" is something you'll discover as soon as we meet to discuss or do your photography.

So how does a western landscape photographer who learned photography from people like Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, and Wynn Bullock come to have a studio in Astoria, Oregon? Well might you ask.

Black and white fine art photography is no way to earn a living. So I signed on with a studio in San Francisco, where I was very well trained in both portraits and weddings. Fortunately the skills I learned for large format photography are also those required for product and architectural photography, so when I opened my own studio, I could photograph just about anyone or anything.

When digital came along, I didn't switch immediately. I waited until the quality of digital photographs was better than that of film. Now virtually all my color work is digital, but I still use film for my black and white landscapes-digital still isn't a good as traditional black and white.

Why am I in Astoria? Just because I love the place. The Oregon Coast is a magnificent spot for landscape photography, and I don't mind the rain. My family came to Oregon almost a century ago.
